What Lies Beneath the Streets Around the Plaza?

Stand near Plaza Ferdinand VII on a pleasant afternoon, and it is easy to notice the beauty of old Pensacola: the trees, the buildings, and the streets that have carried generations of people through downtown. The plaza is filled with the smell of the bay, with markets, and with people. Look around you…they are everywhere.

It is harder to see the stories.

A few steps from the plaza, ordinary corners became the settings for accusations, homicides, violence, difficult decisions, and questions that outlived the people involved. Some names made the newspapers. Others have nearly disappeared from public memory. The streets are familiar; what happened along them may surprise you.

Last week, I shared part of Mayor Peter Alba’s story. On Saturday, October 3, at 4:00 PM, I invite you to walk with me and discover how his story fits among others around the plaza.

Crimes Around the Plaza is a Sweet Tea Murders walking tour of real Pensacola history. We will stop where these events unfolded, consider what people knew at the time, and follow stories whose endings I would rather tell you in person.

I’m Michael Earl Simmons, a retired Pensacola police sergeant, author, and crime historian. I’ve spent years researching the people and cases behind these accounts. On this walk, the old streets become part of the storytelling.

Pensacola has a beautiful face. Come hear some of the history it holds beneath the surface.
