Long before Milton had brick hotels, telephone wires, and busy streets around the courthouse square, Arcadia Mill helped set the town in motion. Its timber, waterpower, labor, and transportation routes turned the Blackwater country into a place of industry and ambition. By the time Charles Sudmall built the Exchange Hotel, Milton had become a modern town — one ready for telephones, automobiles, business deals, and men with money to lose. But behind that progress came darker things: rivalry, suspicion, and a murder that began with a simple telephone call and ended with questions Milton never fully answered.
