The Night the Nation’s Deadliest Fugitive Reached for Officer Lee’s Gun

In the early morning hours of February 15, 1978, the streets of Pensacola were dead quiet. No traffic. No surveillance cameras hummed overhead. No automated dispatchers monitored heart rates or GPS coordinates.

There was only Pensacola Police Officer David Lee, a lone patrol cruiser, and an orange Volkswagen Beetle that caught his eye in the dark.

Most true crime accounts wrap up Ted Bundy’s arrest in a tidy, clinical sentence: “Apprehended during a routine traffic stop.”

Anyone who has worn a badge knows there is no such thing as routine.

What the national headlines rarely capture is the violent, claustrophobic brawl on the cold asphalt of W and Cross Streets. How a seemingly simple stolen vehicle stop detonated into a desperate foot chase in the dark. And the chilling second where Bundy—cornered, manic, and with nothing left to lose—lunged with both hands directly for the holster at Officer Lee’s hip, fighting for the six-shot Smith & Wesson Model 10 .38 revolver.

There is only one reason a desperate killer reaches for an officer’s sidearm.

In that fraction of a second, the course of American crime history hung by a thread. What stopped him wasn’t an algorithm, high-tech backup, or luck. It was the split-second decision-making and raw physical resolve of a solitary patrolman fighting for his life in the dark before he even knew the name of the man underneath him.

At the next Sweet Tea Murders LIVE, we are going past the generalized headlines and stepping onto the Pensacola pavement with Officer Lee. You’ll hear the boots-on-the-ground reality of the takedown, the struggle for the weapon, and the razor-thin margin between a historic arrest and an unthinkable tragedy.

  1. I remember what all Ted Bundy did to our area. It was a very cold night in Tallahassee Fl. My husband and myself went to the Tallahassee Mall. The next morning we was on the campus of FSU. We were selling our Volkswagen Met up with a buyer for it. Not far from where he killed the Beautiful girls on campus. It really affected me the next few weeks. He was a Bad person.

  2. I know that was one very trained officer to apprehend such a horrible person.Although at time not knowing he was a Serial Killer. Hats off to the officer and all Law Enforcement officers across America!!
